John 16: 20-21a [Latin] – Amen, amen, I say to you, that you shall lament and weep, but the world shall rejoice: and you shall be made sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy. A woman, when she is in labour, hath sorrow, because her hour is come; but when she hath brought forth the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy.

Jeremiah 31:16a,10b,17b,13b [Latin] – Let thy voice cease from weeping, and thy eyes [from] tears. He that scattered Israel will gather him: and he will keep him as the shepherd doth his flock. The children shall return to their own borders, I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them joyful after their sorrow.

Detail from “Jesus and Peter on the Water” by Gustave Brion, 1863

Matthew 14:28-31 [Latin]

28 And Peter making answer, said: Lord, if it be thou, bid me come to thee upon the waters.

29 And he said: Come. And Peter going down out of the boat, walked upon the water to come to Jesus.

30 But seeing the wind strong, he was afraid: and when he began to sink, he cried out, saying: Lord, save me.

31 And immediately Jesus stretching forth his hand took hold of him, and said to him: O thou of little faith, why didst thou doubt?

Domine, si tu es, jube me venire ad te super aquas. Et extendens manum apprehendit eum. Et dixit Jesus: Modicae fidei, quare dubitasti? Cumque vidisset ventum validum venientem, timuit, et cum coepisset mergi, clamavit: Domine, salvum me fac. Et extendens manum apprehendit eum. Et dixit Jesus: Modicae fidei, quare dubitasti?

Romans 11:33-36 [Latin]

33 O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!

34 For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor?

35 Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again?

36 For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.
